Bryce sent me this great link to a very interesting study on women defending themselves from rape and the success rates of these methods. Huge hat tip to him as this is awesome. For those on dial up I will sum it up.
Women who used non violent methods of resistance (crying, pleading, etc) were raped about 96% of the time.
Women who used forceful verbal resistance (yelling, screaming) were raped about half the time.
Running works better then yelling as the women who ran were raped about 15% of the time.
Forceful physical resistance is slightly more successful than running. Those women were raped 14% of the time. Striking was more successful than pushing or wrestling.
Finally women who resisted using a knife or a gun were raped less than 1% of the time. I really think that figure speaks for itself. [editor notes the study did not talk about batons, mace, tazers, stun guns, etc. I would wager batons are about the same as guns/ knives and the other miscellaneous weapons would be between the forceful resistance and guns n knives categories.]

So in other words the majority of rapists are lazy and give up if there is much of a struggle. Good to know. Fight like hell, ladies.
I have drilled this into my daughter's head:
1 - someone WILL NOT take you to a second location - to go to a second location means you will AT LEAST get raped and probably killed as well...
2 - you WILL get ANGRY at the suggested use of violence towards you
3 - you WILL yell FIRE and run and scream
4 - I dont care if they have a weopon, you will do all of the above.
There are also statistics on if you run the chances that someone will shoot - the likelyhood that they will hit you - the likelyhood it will be a survivable injury and the likelyhood it will be a mortal wound. If I remember correctly, its like a 20% chance it will be a mortal wound - with those odds I want my daughter to run for her life! And that is IF they shoot (or even have a gun) which depending on the location - crowded mall parking lot or something - they probably wont do....

great post! I'm still not convinced about batons because you need room to swing. for me the stun gun is a little better but then you have to let them close enough to strike. really hard to say.
Rape is a "hate crime" of violence, regardless of the ethnicity or sex of the victim. That is why 96% of victims who cried and pleaded (non-violent methods) were not successful. They played right into the power trip their assailants were having. Violence is necessary to defeat violence.
i suppose thie works well if you are actually abducted or attacked by a sranger. not so much when it's a person you think you can trust. Someone who doesn't know you will flee more easily from you yelling than a person who has calculated your every move. no gun there. no knife. but plenty of survivors....
Huh, how strange that, having a gun,pepper spray, a knife works better than say,screaming and yelling.
Perhaps Chicago and the Illinois state police should look at this. For their brilliant suggestion was, inducing vomiting to deter rape.
Remember, however, that the majority of rapes (like murders) are actually committed by someone who is already known to the victim. This is how they gain access....and a way that they maintain control, by taking advantage of their victim's initial shock that someone known to them would do this.
Don't ever stop thinking. Fight. If overpowered, vomit, urinate, claim to have VD. DO NOT EVER STOP THINKING.

BUT - in my defense, it has been YEARS (like the fat ones) since I have seen Oprah which was where I saw the stat.
It has taken me about 1/2 an hour, but I FOUND IT, and not on her site!
