Well, interesting thoughts. The Self Sufficient lifestyle isn't one size fits all, so it's hard to quantify "norms." I notice the guy is only thinking in terms of his own lifespan, which may mean he has no children. It's a generational issue when you do.

Harry, I think making an intentional decision about what you are trying to prepare for then figuring out the stuff you need for that goal makes sense. A person who wants to be ready for a power outage or home break in has different needs than one who worries about some kind of zombie Apocalypse scenario.

Lastly to Confucious/ the Chinese proverb. If you plan for one year, plant rice. If you plan for 10 years, plant a tree. If you plan for 100 years, educate a child.”
