RE: Using vs Collecting

http://booksbikesboomsticks.blogspot.com/2017/11/using-vs-collecting.html?m=1

Admittedly while there is some overlap between her huge blog and my tiny one (I'm not sure if she knows I exist) we have different angles. Hers is a little more guns and such and mine is more preparedness.

In general I find her reasoning sound. From what I have seen in the survivalist world I have two concerns though.

First people who try to press collectible guns into a working gun role. The guy whose go guns are a P1 Walter and an M1 Garand. He is making a very stupid decision. Without going deep into this gun vs that guns collectibles should be enjoyed and modern designs from post WWII should be used for work.

Second is similar putting money that should go to a working gun towards a collectible one. Don't get me wrong, collect whatever you want. The thing is if you need a defensive handgun buy a Glock 19 or similar gun. Use your non preparedness fun cash to buy that S&W pre model 10 you really want.

Tam is very pleasant, in my experience. We have at least a couple mutual acquaintances, not the least of which is Oleg. She's one of the few double-x'ers I've seen that really know their thundertoys. You should email and introduce yourself. In my infrequent emails to her she's always been very pleasant and helpful.

It's not that simple IMHO. I'm terrible with a Glock. A NRA instructor noted that my hands are wide with stubby fingers, this makes gripping a double stack semi-automatic a problem. My Colt Python .357, on the other hand, puts a bullet exactly where I want it to go. Personally, I'll take the high price, limited capacity and slower reload because where the bullet hits is key. Could a Ruger GP100 do the same thing? Yes, for the most part, but the Python feels better and shoots better. It may be all in my head, but if it works...

As far as a Garand goes, Dad left me his (and my uncle left me his M1 carbine). Sell them? Heck no, these are family heirlooms! At the same time, Pop was adamant that they were working guns, not trophy rifles to be kept unused. My youngest daughter has claimed the carbine, and although I have other rifles, if it came down to needing a rifle in every hand, I'd be holding the Garand. I'm the only one who can reload the fershluging thing!

Tam is local to me and we run in the same circles but have never met. I find her postings to be well done and informative, but for some reason I can't make the push to read them often. Something about her delivery bugs me, and I have no clue why. MY blog reading/writing days have been culled due to work and hustling to make a change in my future.

As far as collecting goes, I'm full bore on collecting AR's for trade and stacking parts deep right now. The prices are falling to ban sunset levels. I can build a medium quality AR15 for less than 500 dollars. That's been a long time coming. Glock gen 4 and 5's have flooded the market with gen 3's and they can be had at 300ish bucks again. Now is the time to stack some back and build that cache rifle you always wanted.

Also, while the economy has been booming, I've been stacking away silver rounds. It's both a retirement as well as a rainy year fund. If the market craps, silver will boom. Gold being back down in the 1200 range is becoming a possible investment source. Always buy physical, never certificates.

Tweel, Here is a link to a video of a small adolescent girl shooting a Glock (34?) in a competition.

If you want to shoot a revolver do so. Within their limitations they are fine rifles.

I'm certainly not suggesting you sell family heirlooms. Just to be honest with what they are and use modern guns for defensive and practical use.

Makes sense. On PMs I physically hold. The exception is a bit of money in a silver ETF I've been dabbling with. That's more of a buy and sell type thing and maybe .01% of my holdings.
