Blog Direction

All, I have been doing some thinking about the direction of the blog. Seems like it's in a bit of a rut and I'm kind of bored of going through the usual motions. So it is time to shake things up. Figured I would solicit your thoughts.

What content is boring you and could be decreased or even eliminated?

What content would you like to see more of?

What entirely new stuff would you like to see?

What sort of outside the box ideas do you think would work well here?

What do you think would attract new readers?

Thanks in advance

Christmas AAR

We had a pretty darn good Christmas. Rented a cabin out in east Texas with my sister and her family. It was a nice little place out in the woods by a pond. We were well on our own but not too far from town to get more beer replace the odd items. A cool place and not too expensive, especially considering two families stayed for a few days.

Bro in Law and I did most of the cooking. For Christmas he did a ham, I did taters au gratin and an apple crisp for desert. The food was well enjoyed by all.

We did lots of fishing for perch. Caught a lot and had a bunch of fun. Wifey (a far better fisher person than I) got the oldest nephew catching fish so he had some fun. I taught him how to gut, clean, filet and cook a few of the biggest ones. Made a rough go of the fileting but with little fish and lacking a proper knife one does what one can. [If we actually needed to eat them I wouldn't cook small fish that way. I would gut, scale and cook them whole then we'd pick off the meat. The point was to show him how to do it.]

The trip was  success and we would like to make similar ones in the future. For a holiday it was nice that nobody had the pressure of hosting and it is easier for everybody to relax about the cumulative traditions and cultural norms that can make holidays a nightmare, especially for the women who try to put it all together. Anyway we had an awesome holiday experience and hope you did too.

Now that the important stuff is over we can move onto material things. Did you all get anything cool and preparedness/ firearms oriented? If so what?

Personally it was a good Christmas for this guy. Got a nice Makita cordless drill and a set of various bits, 20 silver dollars (passed down from a depression era silver bug which is kinda a cool story), a nice CCW friendly long sleeve shirt, an encyclopedia of survival type book that looks pretty cool, a gift card to my favorite local restaurant and through various sources $300 in cash.

The unexpected cash infusion is going to give my long planned AR pistol project a start. It'll get me a lower and start the fund for the upper. This is a priority for the year but will only be funded not via prep funds but solely with 'personal money' so I'm not totally sure how long it will take to complete. I should be able to buy the upper by this summer. This is pretty exciting to me. This has been on the wish list for awhile and I'm finally getting to doing something with it.

Q For Galco Miami Classic Owners

I have been using my Galco Miami Classic a bit recently for some long drives. Finally think I have it adjusted right. Anyway if you wear it fairly high/ tight for a decent draw unless you're a giant there is a fair amount of leftover loose strap. It just sort of flops around. Seeing as it is an expensive piece of gear and maybe some day I'll want to wear it over a sweater or something I do not want to cut them down. Not quite sure what to do with them though.

Anybody else have a similar problem? What did you do to solve it?

Questions in My Head

1) 'Scout Mounting' a rifle scope. Presuming we are not talking about a weapon whose unique characteristics (utilizes stripper clips, Bolt gun with strait bolt you do not want to bend, M1 Garand, pre 'AE' Winchester 30-30, etc) what is the train of though behind forward mounting a magnified optic in this fashion? Pro's? Con's? Suitable for some element of precision at intermediate ranges (out to 600m or so)?

For goodness sake do not mention that Jeff Cooper liked it as a reason to do this. Sir Edmund Hillary was a heck of a mountaineer but times have changed and so has equipment. Let's stick to practical reasons and avoid dogmatic circular thinking.

2) What are your thoughts on storing 5 gallon type buckets of food on their side? In my effort store our bulk type food within the climate controlled portion of our dwelling it occurred to me I would have a lot more options for buckets if they could be stored on their sides (vs standing up). Has anyone tried this?

Thanks in advance.

Small Heaters; Kerosene or Propane?

I'm looking to purchase a small heater. It's uses would be as an alternate heating source for whatever events might come. I've pretty much narrowed it down to the Mr Buddy type propane heater with an adapter to connect to a 5 gallon propane bottle (instead of the tiny disposable bottles) or some sort of kerosene heater.

Propane has a slight edge as it's a fuel we already stock for the ambiguous Coleman stove and lantern plus BBQ. However the (admittedly one time) cost of 2 more bottles is a factor.

On the other hand Kerosene does not have that cost and it will work in our hurricane lantern as well as my multi fuel camping stoves. My folks had these heaters when I was a kid, both to add predictability to winter heating expenses and for emergencies. Generally they worked quite well though are more suited for occasional/ emergency use than several hours a day all winter long.

Open to your thoughts before making a purchase.

As always please separate input based on personal experiences from 3rd hand and internet type stuff. Thanks

What's The Best Deal You've Got Lately?

Time for an up beat post. What is the best shooting/ camping/ preparedness deal you have got recently? How did you get it?

About a week back we were at a big garage sale. They seem to be a thing here. A person, group of people or small business will sponsor one and lots of folks bring their stuff out. Other places lean more towards individual online sales or whatever but here the garage sale fills a high percentage of secondary transactions.

We were looking through the piles and I saw some 5.11 pants. Despite being fine in the pants department I have been wanting to try those out. Looked to see what size they were and it was the right one. They were slightly used but close to new. Figured I'd at least ask what he wanted. He said 2 bucks a piece. I had to restrain myself from jumping up in the air yelling "score". Asked if he would do 3 for $5 which was accepted. Picked the best 3 pair (2 like new and 1 had a small oil/ grease mark on it) then went about my way.

Figure 1 will become home defense pants and the other two will probably go in a kit and a cache respectively.

So what is the best shooting/ camping/ preparedness deal you have got recently? How did you get it?

Speaking of deals Lucky Gunner has 1,000rds of PMC XM193 for $455 and

12 ga - 2-3/4" - 9 Pellet - 00 Buck - Low Recoil - Fiber Wad - Rio - 250 Rounds $120

Ammo prices are getting better which is excellent.

Gun Safe Bleg

Hey All, It is time for Ryan to buy a real gun safe. Looking for some advice, I'll list my criteria below:
-Fairly respectable manufacturer who'll likely be around for awhile with decent customer service. I need to protect our guns, some cash and ancillarry stuff but don't a super safe to beat the kind of burglars who would come after a hundred grand in cash or drugs.
-Mechanical lock.
-Unsure of exact dimensions but one that could hold at least 16 long guns with room for pistols and various other stuff would be nice. I don't have any guns of unusual length so normal height would be fine.
-Finish. It would be nice to have a couple color options so we can get one Wifey likes best.
-Price. The budget is about a grand. There is some flexibility but the budget will also need to pay shipping (if applicable) and get it to my home so a base cost 30% over budget is probably a nonstarter.
-A modular configuration that could be changed if needed down the road would be nice but is not essential.

So as to specific questions
1) What type of safe would you suggest?
2) Are these general criteria realistic at this price point?
3) Where would you recommend buying one?

Universal Service Pistol Pocket Carry?

Are you comfortable carrying a small universal service pistol (Glock, M&P, etc) fully loaded in a pocket holster? (not considering fit, lets say the pocket in question is of sufficient size to conceal the pistol) What is your thinking behind the answer? Not going to poke at anybody's answers, just curious.

Yugo AK's?

Interested in peoples thoughts on Yugo AK's. Specifically what do you think of the Zastava PAP M70? In particular I am curious about peoples PERSONAL EXPERIENCES with these guns. If you happen to work in the gun industry that would be a special bonus. So please let me know,

Thanks Ryan

Weatherby Vanguard Series 2?

Looking at trading into a Weatherby Vanguard Series 2 in .308. My concept of use would be as a potential hunting rifle as well as a basic 'precision' rifle. Not looking to build a 3k uuber sniper rifle, just looking for a good affordable gun that I can put decent glass on and shoot out to a few hundred meters.

The stuff I have read online was generally good. If you have input based on personal experiences I am interested in hearing them.

Edited to include: Thanks everybody for the input. I decided against making this trade. It'll be (soon via trade or in several months by purchasing) a Savage 10FP or maybe a Rem 700. Probably the Savage.

Anybody in Northern Louisiana?

Hi, I am interested in opening a dialog with any readers living in Western Central Louisiana, specifically the greater Alexandria to Leesville/ Ft Polk area. If you have solid *current* knowledge of that area and are willing to let me bother you with a few questions please send me an email @ Maybe we can grab a beer or something down the road.

Poncho Discussion Revisited

I asked you all for some help with finding a few good poncho's not too long ago. Between your help and my own research I have realized that prices USGI poncho's are widely and regularly available for are IMO silly. Maybe I'm getting old and inflation is doing its thing but there is just no way a darn poncho should cost $50.

So that leaves me looking at other options. We have other poncho's but none quite fit the bill. I prefer MILSURP for its sheer ruggedness and durability. Also to fit my concept of use a poncho would need to be able to unfold into a big flat piece of materiel to be used for shelter making, covering things, etc. Color would need to be something that works in a variety of environments (basically not ACU or DCU type patterns). Weight and bulk are also considerations. Cost is always a consideration, of course I would like them to cost a buck, be perfect and last forever, but if I could get something in the $25 or less range that would be great.

What sort of poncho's do you like? Any suggestions?

Looking for a Few Good Poncho's

Hey All, I am in the market for a couple of genuine USGI poncho's in the old woodland camo pattern. Looking for new or used in legitimately good condition at a sane price. If you know a dealer that has these in stock please let me know. Thanks,

Question: Winchester 1894 Basic Spare Parts Setup

What would you consider a basic spare parts setup for a Winchester 94 30-30?

My initial thoughts are extractor, ejector, firing pin, tube spring (whatever it's called the spring for the tubular magazine), hammer spring and the 6 or so the screws/ pins that hold the gun together. If you have an opinion on this please let me know in the comments section. I'm looking to stash some spare parts for my Cowboy Assault Rifle. Thanks

Edited to include: Somebody asked about Marlin spare parts. If anyone can help on that front please do so in the comments section.

Rust/ Blueing Question

It looks like I'm going to have a little bit of a project this weekend. Heard the thing to do for rust is to get the finest steel wool you can find, use lots of oil and gently rub the surface in question.Would appreciate any input on the matter.

For background there are two finishes that need some love. One is Project 870 (a plane Jane 870 Express) and the other is blued steel. Probably going to touch up the 870 with some spray paint once it's taken care of. If the blued steel comes out OK I would like to leave it as is and keep the surface well lubed.

Thoughts and advice would be great. Thanks

Kel Tech SU-16 Affordable Lightweight Concealability or Garbage?

The topic of the Kel Tech SU-16 came up recently. My initial thoughts are that it is probably not a long term hard use gun but they are really light, fold up small, take AR mags and shoot .223 ammo. For a gun to conceal in a backpack or cache someplace it has some potential. Also they are very inexpensive which means I would be more willing to risk one being lost than an AR. I know there are a couple versions, one with a plastic front sight that seems less than ideal.

If you have personal experience with the Kel Tech SU-16 I would like to know your thoughts.

M4 Flat Top 1" Scope Mounts

Hey, I am pretty much set on a Leupold Mark AR 1.5-4 but unsure about a mount. Leupold makes one but I am not sure the clearance in back is sufficient for a (folding) BUIS. Also I would prefer to be able to take it off without a wrench if needed.

If you are running a 1" scope on an AR or similar gun I am curious about the mount you are using and how you like it.

Thanks in advance.

M-4/ AR-15 Optics and Civilian Legal IR Lasers

I am looking at the Leupold Mark AR 1.5-4x20. The Firearms Blog reviewed it awhile back and it seems like the ticket. If anybody has PERSONAL EXPERIENCES with this scope I would really appreciate their thoughts.

Also I have been looking at civilian legal IR lasers. I am familiar and comfortable with the lasers we use on the .mil side but the civilian offerings are something new to me. Have heard of the DBAL but they have multiple models and the same company makes a few other lasers. From reading the descriptions I can't tell the difference and the prices vary widely. Of course I would like to keep cost down but would rather take the hard right over the easy wrong. In any case if you have experience with multiple models or know a place that does a good comparison of readily available civilian legal lasers that would be a big help.

Thanks in advance,
